*Disclaimer: This article does not in any way represent the political affiliations of Safro, it is merely a collection of interesting and exciting facts that together seek to praise South Africa, through one of its political parties, for achieving another world first.
THE OBAMA OF SOWETO – this is the American-centric comparison that would dog Mmusi Maimane in his recent political career, from his campaign for premiership in the Gauteng to his eventual election as the new leader of the Democratic Alliance on the 10th of May 2015. While the charismatic Maimane has certainly not been discrete in taking leaves from Obama’s campaign manual, the likenesses between the two men have now been further cemented in that both are the first black leaders to be elected to head political parties’ whose leadership historically has been about as colourful as a pitcher of milk. However, the South African politician does best his American counterpart in terms of novelty by succeeding someone not only of a different race, but also of a different gender.
Gender and race, especially race, are important and often provocative points of discussion for many South Africans. Not surprising since our sunny shores host a veritable potjie of racial and ethnic diversity – the eighth most diverse in the world in fact. Racial integration and equalisation through legislation remain sensitive topics for advocates on all sides, the legacy of apartheid serving as ample source of fuel for heated debates across racial and socio-economic divides. The promotion of women and female interests in South Africa, although lagging, is thankfully not as contentious an issue and partial successes, at least legislatively, have been achieved since the end of apartheid – as of the beginning of 2015 our parliament boasts the 10th highest representation of women in the world, although at 41.5% it still remains far from being truly representative of a national demographic that constitutes a child bearing majority (51%). In 2013, 20% more females were registered to vote than males. Accordingly the importance of progressive leadership choices capturing both gender and racial diversity should be obvious for any South African political party, yet it took 21 years of democracy and five national elections for any major party to change both the gender and the race of its party leader. The Democratic Alliance achieved a first in South African political history on the 10th of May when Mmusi Maimane took the reins of leadership from Helen Zille.
And yet, in the year 2015 it would seem that it is also the only party in the world to have done so.
An independent study of the racial and gender changes in the leadership of 529 major political parties across 99 democratic countries, between 1994 and 2015, shows the following: Only 95 (17%) of those political parties have had a change in the gender of the person in the top position of their party since 1994. Most of these parties (79%) are found in Western countries such as in Europe, North America and Australasia. On the other hand only five political parties (1%), besides the DA, have in the previous 21 years had an obvious change in race of their leaders. These include the Mauritian Militant Movement (Mauritius), Democratic Party (USA), Free Democratic Party (Germany), United Democratic Party (Belize) and the Green Party (New Zealand). However, none of these parties have also had a change in the gender of their leaders, besides the Green Party in New Zealand which technically has had both a change in race and gender, but their party structure mandates a dual-gender chairpersonship, meaning that both genders must be represented in the top position at any time, therefore it does not practically represent an actual change in the gender of leadership. Otherwise, the only other political party that has come close to what the DA has accomplished is Bloc Quebecois (Canada) who in 2011 would have checked both boxes with Vivian Barbot, but unfortunately she would only serve as an interim leader, a brief breath of fresh air in the party’s traditional procession of pale males. Thus the DA remains the only political party in the world that has, in the previous 21 years, seen elected leaders of different races as well as of different genders.
And so the new gender and racially diverse DA joins the heart transplant, CAT scan and Kreepy Krauly in the hallowed halls of South African innovations and international firsts. Congratulations to the Mmusi Maimane, the Democratic Alliance and to South Africa – a country that remains interesting, contradictory and a little bit funny at times.
The Data
Only countries with multi-party democracies that have existed since 1994 were chosen for this study to ensure a measure of democratic election of leaders within the parties and equal level of political maturity with South African parties. For this purpose Freedom House’s list of electoral democracies in 1993 was used to identify a 102 countries that meet the above criteria.
The CIA world factbook would provide a list of 958 major political parties in the identified countries. Of those, 529 had easily accessible public records on who filled previous leadership positions, thereby making it possible to ascertain the gender and race of the leaders.
Western countries would notably have more accessible records available while, African and South American countries would not.

Two fancy new cellphones– the value of a young South African woman’s life, at least according to the hitman that reportedly requested only R30 000 to take the life of Jade Panayiotou. Police suspect Jade’s husband of masterminding the death of his own wife in a case that is eerily reminiscent of the (alleged) 2010 Dewani spousal liquidation vacation. In both cases the monetary value of person’s life would be determined by men willing to prematurely end it for a nominal fee.
The history of hitmen stretches back as far as man’s impatience with the natural lifecycle of another, and his willingness to pay for the shortening thereof. Surprisingly, however, there is hardly any data available on contract killings (besides in Australia), despite the cash-for-corpses businesses being lucrative enough to lure Woody Harrelson’s father into the trade.
But exactly how lucrative is it to be a modern day hitman, or alternatively, how much value is put on taking someone’s life in the 21st century? Figures seem to differ significantly from country to country. In South Africa, the Panayioutou and Dewani cases reportedly involved hitman asking R30 000 and R15 000 respectively, but a Pretoria woman in the year 2000 confessed to paying as little as R5 700 for two men to strangle her long-time lover. However, compared to the cost of contract killers in other countries, South Africa seems practically overpriced. A comparison of 15 countries, with readily available public data recording the cost of hitmen, shows South Africa to be only the 6th lowest by cost. By far the most affordable on the list is India and Mexico where ensuring the issue of a premature death certificate will cost you a mere R350. In Russia a hit costs the equivalent of a 2 bottles of quality vodka (R1000) while in sunnier climes a deep tissue projectile massage courtesy of a Philippines Death Squad will set you back an affordable R1 100. Surprisingly, even in the United Kingdom people are willing to permanently expatriate friend or foe to the afterlife for less than a R4000. India and Russia have already been mentioned, but procuring information on the cost of contract killers in Brazil and China, our other two BRICS compatriots, proves difficult. However, with the Brazilian populace, at least the tiny, homicidal part, evidently placing as little value on a human life as their South African counterparts (Brazil has 25 homicides per 100,000 people compared to South Africa’s 28) it is expected that Brazilian hitmen will probably be equally inexpensive. Reports on the pricing structures of Chinese contract killers are also sparse, unless you intend to hire a hitmen to murder an artificial online persona. On the opposite end of the scale there are countries where contract killers are prohibitively expensive, at least for the man on the street, such as Spain (R270 000 – R690 000) and Australia (R136 000 – R830 000). Meanwhile in France, the price for the precipitation of a Monaco real estate heiresses’ obituary reaches R3 300 000. Lastly, in American, bigger is better is a motto that evidently remains true even in the hiring of assassins – a trio of American snipers will gladly arrange the most decadent of send-offs for R8 000 000.
Besides the relative costliness of the South African hitman, an analysis of the nine most high profile cases of reported contract killings in South Africa (see below for data) since 1994 also provides the following interesting insights into how South Africa’s murderers-for-hire prefer to kill their victims and who is most likely to hire them. In 66% of the cases guns still remain the weapon of choice for the discerning professional. Others prefer the surgical precision of a razor sharp blade (11%) and some are even unafraid of literally getting their hands dirty (11%). And then there is the one particularly cruel and heartless killer that burnt his victim alive in the boot of his own car. In this particular case it was the wife who was convicted, and eventually sentenced to life in prison, for arranging the murder of her husband, a situation which is no exception in the world of South African contract killings – 45% of victims are murdered under order of their own spouses. A chilling statistic for any soon-to-be-weds.
In conclusion, arranging the murder of another, especially someone as supposedly dear as the person publicly promised your unending love and cherishment, indicates an extraordinary poverty of conscience, but wherever in the world you may find jilted lovers, wronged business partners or greedy spouses, there too will you find another – one who is willing to shoot, stab, strangle or burn alive a fellow human being for a the price of fancy phone.

On the 25th of April 2015, an immense earthquake measuring between 7.8 and 8.1 on the Moment Magnitude Scale (the successor of the Richter-Scale) hit the south-east Asian country of Nepal – the traditional departure point for most climbers attempting to ascend the ever imposing Mount Everest. As of the 1st of May the official death toll has been measured at over 6000, with some officials predicting that as many as 15,000 may actually have perished. An instantaneous, devastating and seemingly senseless loss of life, but far from the pinnacle of Mother Nature’s wrath.
Nature has historically proven particularly unforgiving towards the Asian continent, especially the Chinese, with the top three worst natural disasters ever recorded all having struck mainland China. The single worst of these being the 1931 floods of the Yellow and Yangtze rivers that left almost four million dead from drowning, disease and starvation. Recent disasters such as Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the 2011 Tsunami that pummeled the coast of Japan, and now the Nepalese massacre serve as constant reminders that planet earth is prone to turning against humanity on a whim. In sunny South Africa we may have our fair share of socio-economic problems, but thankfully we have largely been spared the environmental onslaught – at least for the most part.
Note that for the purposes of this article, the term natural disasters will henceforth be limited to floods & storms, wildfires, tornadoes and earthquakes.
Using data detailing the previous 21 years of natural disasters in South Africa, compiled with the help of the useful International Disaster Database and various South African news sources, one can start to construct a comprehensive rap sheet of Nature’s indiscriminate attempts at culling our population here at the southern tip of Africa. Since the end of apartheid there have been 801 documented deaths in South Africa as a result of natural disasters. To put this figure in perspective: if the (conservative) death toll estimate of 6000 following the aftermath of the Nepalese tragedy were to be matched by South Africa then it would take almost 300 years to equal the tragic loss of life that happened in those devastating 20 seconds.
In South Africa, by far the most deadly of the four environmental adversaries are floods & storms, claiming almost 80% (660) of all lives lost to nature. The least dangerous of foes are earthquakes, which have only managed to rob two unfortunate underground miners of their lives in a 5.3 MMS attack near Stilfontein in the North West. Tornadoes (42 deaths) seem to wage an almost exclusive vendetta against the Eastern Cape while Wildfires round up the fearsome foursome, killing 117 people since 1994.
The single worst natural disaster since apartheid was the 1995 rainy season that claimed 207 victims, mainly in KwaZulu-Natal – the province that has historically been Nature’s likeliest target. The ancestral kingdom of Shaka is the most common crime scene for Nature’s vengeance, accounting for almost 50% of fatalities, the 2nd worst afflicted being Limpopo. The province that is by far the safest to stay in if one wishes to regularly brave the outdoors is the Free State, having only lost 3 locals to the elements in the past 21 years – 2 to a Tornado in 2012 and 1 child to a storm in 2011 – equal in amount to Currie Cups won by the province in the same time period.
According to a factoid that adorned the walls of the Cape Town Aquarium as recently as 2010, 54 people per year die from toasters in South Africa. This statistic was used by the Aquarium to contrast the relatively low amount of human fatalities caused by sharks per year (only 4 per year), but if true, then it would also mean that on average, more people per year die from toasters in South Africa than of natural disasters (only 38 per year).
Food for thought.

24 April 2015 – The South African release date for Avengers: Age of Ultron, another epic superhero blockbuster delivering a wantonly destructive romp through numerous international destinations, this time including downtown Johannesburg. The latest Iron Man and company outing includes a 20 minute scene featuring (yet another) gratingly accented South African – Hollywood rarely seems able to get it right – and a shocking disregard for private property in the Joburg CBD, the owners of which are certainly kicking themselves for not staying up to date on their “collateral damage resultant from an over-exuberant altercation between hulking green beast with surprisingly elastic purple pants and 3 meter tall metal-machine-man” insurance payments. The inevitable carnage was filmed over a period of 3 weeks in Egoli, thereby adding A:AoU to the lengthy list of feature length films that were shot, at least partially, on location in South Africa.
According to the Internet Movie DataBase (IMDB) Age of Ultron is the 709th feature film released that sports our beautiful bundu’s as backdrop*. Although South Africa has a history with the bioscope that dates back to 1895, the very first movies shot on location in SA were De Voortrekkers and a Zulu’s devotion, and both these films were only released in 1916 by the newly established African Film Productions, thus marking 2016 as a celebratory occasion for a century of Mzanzi in the movies.
Besides the numerous international movies that would merely exploit our wonderful weather, beautiful backdrops and low-priced labour, South Africa’s own movie making history is filled with cinematic classics such as King Solomon’s Mines (1937), Cry, The Beloved Country (1951), Zulu (1964), Boesman En Lena (1973), The Gods Must Be Crazy (1980), Jock Of The Bushveld (1986), and Oh Schuck’s… it’s Schuster (1989). The contemporary post-apartheid film industry would also deliver a bevy of cult hits including Lipstick Dipstick (1994), Paljas (1998), Stander (2003), U-Carmen eKhayelitsha (2005), Tsotsi (2005), Bakgat (2008), District 9 (2009) and of course Neill Blomkamp’s latest hour and half long misjudged marketing vehicle for Die Antwoord – Chappie (2015).
Of all the movies that were at least partially shot on our shimmering shores, the top three are, according to user ratings from IMDB, the new Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)(9.2/10), the latest darling in the revival of Afrikaans cinema, Ballade Vir n Enkeling (2015)(8.8/10), and tied for third place are the equally obscure (at least to me) but intriguingly named The Angel, The Bicycle And The Chinaman’s Finger (1992)(8.3/10) and Dr. Kalie (1968)(8.3/10).
Of course no movie history is complete without a few duds, and where Hollywood tries its best to deny the existence of Battlefield Earth and Gigli, so too are there a few movies captured on film in SA that are best relegated to the very back of the collective human consciousness . The first of these is the forgettable Space Mutiny (1988)(2/10), the worst part of an already terrible 4 Sci-Fi film Collectors Set quartet, that according to reviewers is an “hilariously bad sci-fi epic that’s guaranteed to have you in stitches”, not surprising as one of the most memorable lines in the movie is the trite, yet strangely chuckle inducing, “Take that, you space bitch!”. Secondly we have the Outlaw of Gor (1988)(1.9/10), affectionately referred to by absolutely no one as Gor II. The lack of any kind of attention to detail or nuance in producing this title is evident not only in the description of the movie, “[a]n Earthman returns to the planet Gor, and fights against tyranny”, but also in the fact that the main character’s name “Cabot” is spoken more than 55 times in the first 10 minutes of the movie. The final movie, the title that holds the distinctive honour of being the worst movie ever to showcase South African scenery, is Chatur Singh Two Star (2011)(1.7/10). As much as I would attempt wit in describing this Bollywood abomination, I have to acknowledge, as any respectable author should, when I have already been bested by another. One that is able to so succinctly express, in no more than 34 words, the emotions that this movie evokes that any additional words would be entirely superfluous. For this I respectfully concede to the following review of Chatur Singh Two Star by IMDB user Vivart Pandey: “I have no doubt about comic talent in sanjay dutt. but I can say that these have no clues about what is comedy movie. Don’t see this movie there is nothing in this movie”. ….brilliant.
So remember that 2016 marks a century of South Africa in the cinema and some the most memorable, and the most terrible, movies to ever grace our silver screens. Go revisit an old SA classic or, if you feel charitable, go rent Chatur Singh Two Star and effectively double the income that the producers of that disgrace will ever receive.
*I know it says 732, but 23 of those films have not yet been released.

Cecil John Rhodes – businessman, mining magnate, politician, colonialist and subject of transformative debate. Also, not surprisingly, one very rich South African.
In 1907, five years following a fatal heart-attack at his Muizenberg home, the British-born Rhodes’ estate would eventually be valued at an impressive £3,345,000, a figure that even today would leave a twinkle in any SARS representative’s eye . Take into account a hundred years of inflation, however, and the contemporary value of Rhodes’ fortune rapidly inflates to a statue toppling £307 million, or R5.5 billion* at the current exchange rate. Although not quite enough to secure the colonial fat cat the distinguished honour of being the country’s richest person it is enough to ensure a respectable 19th spot on the SA richest list – just behind Raymond Ackerman, best known for being the only billionaire ever to have been fired by Checkers.
“Cecil John Rhodes’ fortune would have been worth R5.5 billion in 2015”
Rhodes’ R5.5 billion would have been enough to treat every one of 53 million South Africans to a whole, deliciously prepared, chicken from Nandos – a considerable purchase when taking into account that 10.7 million people are currently living under the food poverty line of R11 a day and are barely able to afford even a daily dipping sauce (R10.90) from the providers of periperi poultry. It is this massive gulf between the tiny club of wealthy few and the destitute masses that has earned the South Africa story the tragic sub-title of the most unequal country in the world in terms of income distribution.
In 2012, American resentment regarding unequal income distribution popularised the term onepercenter – a derogatory title reserved for the richest percentile of Americans. The extraordinary wealth of the onepercenters were exposed to illustrate the massive imbalance between the top earners and the rest, the 99%, whose earnings were minute in comparison. In the states, the average annual income of the top 1 percent was R8.6 million* in 2012. The interesting question is: how many millions of Rands do the top 1% of South Africans earn per year? The disappointing answer is: none. At least not to qualify as the top 1%.
In South Africa, according to data on monthly earnings from STATSSA (adjusted for inflation), one need only earn R24 390 per month* (R292 680 per year) in 2015 to qualify as being in the top one percent of all South Africans in terms of monthly income (more accurately 1,3% – the nature of the data made it difficult to identify a value closer to 1%). Naturally most earners in the fields of engineering, financial services, and Information Technology are able to surpass this 1,3% income threshold quite comfortably, even at the junior level, according to available data, but it is interesting to note that also a skilled senior artisan and/or draughtsman could eventually break the prestigious R25 000p/m salary barrier needed to join the earning elite.
“If you earn more than R25 000 per month in 2015 then you earn more than 98.7% of South Africa”
To illustrate the relatively small size of this 1% group, imagine that these top 647 550 fortunate individuals, all earning in excess of R24 390 p/m, could comfortably be seated in as few as 7 Soccer City stadiums – presumably watching Bafana nearly win 7 excruciating times. If one of them were to emigrate every second then it would only take about a week for the current group of onepercenters to bolster the ranks of the lower middle class in Australia, earning less than an 21 year old employee at Mcdonalds*.
“Every South African earning more than R24 390 per month in 2015 could be comfortably seated in 7 Soccer City stadiums”
So if you are lucky enough to be earning R24 390 or more per month in SA then remember that you are part of the income earning elite, and that statistically for every 100 people that you walk or drive past on your daily commute to your fancy high-paying job, only one of those will earn more than you.

Rhode’s R5.5 billion – Being nearly impossible to any reliable information on South African inflation data before 1960 there is thankfully a very good website that is able to calculate the effect of inflation all the way back to the 1205.
